August Along The River
The cooler breezes that have stayed with us along the Allegheny are creating unique environments. From our porch here at The Barnard House we can watch the Blue Herons and Eagles fish for their daily catch. The high murky water's are a benefit to the fish since it provides a great cover to hide from the predators. The vegetation has enjoyed the increased rain fall and has recovered from the heavy ice that scrapped the riparian in winters wrath.
The insects which are usually abundant have had populations decreased. Pollinator's have been hit hard from various issues.Butterflies and Moths must have had the coccons froze with the freezing tempertures since we notice few enjoying our flower gardens. The normal shrill of the Cicadas is but a low murmur. Darting birds find food reguardless but we wonder if they will suffer negative impacts on populations with the reduction of insects.
As the month of August continues the enjoyment on shore in in the water increases. Kayakers and canoes find their way from here in Emlenton or from up river in Franklin or Fisherman's Cove. Everyone takes their time soaking up the sun and paddling as they view the Muscrats, River Otter and occasional bank Beaver are shy but folks seem to spot them especially if they take the time and are quiet enough when they float in the back water's around small islands or back channels.
We welcome you to come join us and take in the beautiful sites and part take in the many recreational opportunities the Valley offers. Come visit and sit a spell on the porch- we guarantee you will be glad you came!
